What Educate Girls does

Educate Girls works in rural India to get out-of-school girls enrolled and to help children in government schools catch up on reading and math. Founded in 2007 by Safeena Husain, it works in four states — Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar — and also runs Pragati, a second-chance program for young women aged 15–29 to complete their schooling.

The work runs through Team Balika, more than 23,000 community volunteers across 30,000+ villages who find girls who are not in school and work with families to enroll them. Educate Girls reports mobilizing over 2 million girls for enrollment and supporting 2.4 million students with remedial learning. It also ran what it describes as the world's first Development Impact Bond in education, a pay-for-results contract; according to The Life You Can Save, it beat its targets, reaching 160% of the learning goal and 116% of the enrollment goal.

Educate Girls is a recommended charity of The Life You Can Save, and in 2025 it became the first Indian organization to receive the Ramon Magsaysay Award. US donors can give through Educate Girls US, a 501(c)(3) (EIN 46-4493359).
