What Center for Reproductive Rights does
The Center for Reproductive Rights is a New York–based legal advocacy organization founded in 1992 by Janet Benshoof, originally as the Center for Reproductive Law and Policy. It works on abortion, contraception, maternal health, adolescent health and rights, assisted reproduction, and reproductive health in humanitarian settings, and it frames these issues as fundamental human rights.
Its lawyers work in national courts, before United Nations committees, and before regional human rights bodies on five continents. In the U.S., the Center says it has taken part in every major Supreme Court abortion case since its founding. For example, it handled the Whole Woman's Health challenge to Texas abortion-clinic restrictions, which the Supreme Court agreed to review in 2015. Internationally, it reports that its work has helped strengthen reproductive laws and policies in more than 65 countries.
Charity Navigator gives the Center a Four-Star rating, and CharityWatch rates it B+ (rating issued April 2023). For its fiscal year ending June 2025, it reported about $53.7 million in revenue and $65.2 million in expenses (ProPublica).
