What Equality Now does

Equality Now is an international human rights organization that uses the law to advance the rights of women and girls. It was founded in 1992 by Jessica Neuwirth, Navanethem Pillay and Feryal Gharahi, has registered offices in the United States, the United Kingdom and Kenya, and works with partner groups around the world.

Its focus is legal and systemic change: identifying laws that discriminate against women and girls, then working with local, national and regional partners to get them repealed or reformed and to press governments to enforce protections. Issues include sex discrimination in legal codes, sexual violence, child marriage, female genital mutilation/cutting and sexual exploitation. Much of its research is comparative — a 2017 report examined rape laws across 82 jurisdictions — and since 1999 it has published a recurring 'Words and Deeds' review tracking discriminatory laws.

The organization says it has played a role in reforming about 140 discriminatory laws since 1992, including 17 legal changes in 2025 that it estimates benefit more than 69 million women and girls. Equality Now holds a Four-Star rating from Charity Navigator. Because its work runs through long legal and advocacy campaigns rather than direct services, results are measured mainly in laws changed and enforced.
