What Fish Welfare Initiative does
Fish Welfare Initiative (FWI) works to reduce the suffering of farmed fishes, focusing on some of the largest and most neglected farmed fish populations. Founded in 2019, it does most of its work in India, where it partners with fish farms to improve conditions, chiefly by improving water quality and reducing stocking density. It coordinates this through a farm partnership network called the Alliance for Responsible Aquaculture, and in 2025 it expanded a small team in China.
FWI estimates its farm program improved the lives of about 1.9 million fishes in India in 2025, and Animal Charity Evaluators counts more than 150 partner farms. Alongside the farm work, FWI runs research and development on things like remote sensing of water quality, feed fortification, and slaughter methods, and has field-tested a welfare assessment protocol for Indian major carps. Its own year-end review described 2025 as a year of strong groundwork but few R&D breakthroughs.
FWI is candid with donors: ACE evaluated it in 2025 and did not recommend it, citing uncertainty about some programs while judging its work likely more cost-effective than the average animal charity. FWI itself says its 2026 budget is already funded and points donors toward ACE-recommended charities.
