Shrimp Welfare Project

The first organization, by its own description, dedicated exclusively to improving the welfare of the ~440 billion shrimp farmed each year, deploying humane electrical stunners and pushing producers away from cruel practices like eyestalk ablation.

$1 helps ~1,400 farmed shrimp a year, by SWP's own estimate — and Animal Charity Evaluators has named it a Recommended Charity every year since 2023.

What Shrimp Welfare Project does

Shrimp Welfare Project (SWP) works to reduce the suffering of farmed shrimps, which it estimates number around 440 billion a year. It was founded in 2021 through the Charity Entrepreneurship incubation program, is registered as a charity in the UK, and describes itself as the first organization focused exclusively on the welfare of farmed shrimps.

Its flagship program, the Humane Slaughter Initiative, helps shrimp producers adopt electrical stunning so animals are rendered unconscious before slaughter; SWP supplies stunners at minimal or no cost and secures corporate commitments. According to Animal Charity Evaluators, SWP deployed four stunners in 2024 that together affect roughly 870 million shrimps a year. In India, its Sustainable Shrimp Farmers of India program works directly with farmers on water quality and stocking density, and SWP also presses producers and retailers to move to breeding stock that has not undergone eyestalk ablation. It engages retailers mainly in the UK and producers in countries including Vietnam, Honduras, Ecuador, Thailand and India.

ACE has named SWP a Recommended Charity every year since 2023. SWP's own estimate is that each dollar helps about 1,400 shrimps a year. US donors can give through SWP's donate page, Every.org, or ACE.
