What Heart to Heart International does

Heart to Heart International is a humanitarian health organization based in Lenexa, Kansas. It works to get medical care and supplies to people after disasters and in communities with limited access to health care, in the U.S. and around the world. Its main programs cover disaster response, access to medicine, and community health work such as installing point-of-care laboratories.

The group began in 1992, when Dr. Gary Morsch and fellow Rotary Club members delivered medicine to people affected by the Chernobyl disaster. It has since responded to events including Hurricane Katrina, the 2010 Haiti earthquake, the 2014 Ebola outbreak in Liberia (where it set up a treatment unit) and the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023 the World Health Organization verified it as a Type 1 Mobile Emergency Medical Team; the organization says it was only the fourth U.S. team to earn that designation. Recent work includes distributing more than 43,000 hygiene kits after Hurricane Melissa.

The organization reports delivering over $3 billion worth of health and humanitarian support to 131 countries, backed by more than 1.1 million volunteer hours. Charity Navigator gives it four stars with a score of 93%.
