What Team Rubicon does
Team Rubicon is a veteran-led humanitarian organization headquartered in Los Angeles that sends volunteer teams, known as Greyshirts, to help communities before, during and after disasters. Typical work includes debris removal, home repairs and preparedness projects, and its long-term recovery program rebuilds homes for families after the initial response ends.
It began in January 2010, when Jake Wood and William McNulty gathered supplies from friends and family and led a small medical team into Port-au-Prince three days after the Haiti earthquake. It has since grown into a large national volunteer organization. In 2025 alone it reported 83 disaster response operations across 24 states, 788 service projects, 262,900 volunteer hours and 46 homes completed through long-term recovery. Deployments that year ranged from a glacial flood in Alaska to recovery from Hurricane Helene in the Southeast, along with wildfire response in California.
Team Rubicon says its work has reached over 14 million people in more than 3,400 communities. CharityWatch rates it A based on 2022 financials, and Charity Navigator gives it four stars. Donations support a Ready Reserve Fund intended to let teams launch quickly when disaster strikes.
