What Akashinga does
Akashinga is a conservation organization that builds teams of women rangers to protect wildlife and wild landscapes in southern Africa. Formerly known as the International Anti-Poaching Foundation, it launched the Akashinga program in 2017 with 16 women rangers in Zimbabwe and has since expanded to Mozambique and Botswana.
Its rangers carry out frontline protection of wildlife areas, and the organization reports it now has more than 400 local and global staff. It says it manages more than 13.1 million acres in total, including over 1.3 million acres in Zimbabwe, and credits its work with a 90% decline in elephant poaching in Zimbabwe and a 400% increase in wildlife in its reserves; these figures are the organization's own. Including its earlier years as the International Anti-Poaching Foundation, it says it has supported or led more than 50 conservation initiatives.
